Nature of Liberalism and History of the West: An Exhibition in Milan / Natura del liberalismo e storia dell'Occidente: una mostra a Milano

The history of liberalism is a long one, marked by controversies about what the true nature of this school of thought really is. The curators of an exhibition on liberal thinking and the history of the West organised in Milan from October 15 to November 21 outline the criteria which guided them in the difficult task of presenting the history of an idea to the public. The thesis at the centre of this essay is that the heart of liberalism is to be found in the resistance of individuals, civil society and the market in the face of the growth of governmental power. The different forms of government produced in the course of the last five centuries have a crucial characteristic in common: namely, the tendency to reduce the autonomy of individuals and society.

Quella del liberalismo è una storia lunga, segnata da annose controversie su quale sia la sua vera natura. In occasione della mostra sul pensiero liberale e sulla storia dell'Occidente organizzata a Milano dal 15 ottobre al 21 novembre, i curatori di tale iniziativa espongono i criteri che li hanno guidati nel difficile lavoro di presentare ad un vasto pubblico la storia di un'idea. La tesi al centro di questo scritto è che il cuore del liberalismo sia da riconoscere nella resistenza espressa dagli individui, dalla società civile e dal mercato di fronte alla crescita dei poteri statuali. Le diverse forme di Stato, prodotte nel corso della storia degli ultimi cinque secoli, condividono infatti una cruciale caratteristica: la tendenza a restringere l'autonomia degli individui e della società.
