Le aspettative di un cambio della guardia nelle elezioni presidenziali del novembre 2008 si accentrano per la maggior parte, ma non esclusivamente, sul disastroso andamento della guerra in Iraq, benché siano molti coloro i quali ritengono che il ritiro dall’Iraq sarà deciso e avviato ben prima delle elezioni. The people keenest for Iraq to cease appearing to be an unending disaster are the Republican candidates. The last thing they want is for President Bush to hand them down the hot potato of a national turnaround. They see the Baker-Hamilton report as the key to getting out of Iraq without setting time limits, whereas Democratic candidates are pushing for a deadline. It’s over this contrast that the battle for the White House will be fought.
