The rejoinder examines the anti-statism, individualism and egalitarianism which Lipset has presented as the liberal core of American exceptionalism. Anti-statism has long been fought against on both ideological and political grounds, and governmental intervention has eventually come to resemble European patterns. As to individualism and egalitarianism, their combination in political institutions was first experimented in American political parties, and they have long remained an exceptional achievement of American democracy.
