This paper deals with some of the trade issues raised by the transformation of the economies of Eastern Europe. It examines both current account bottlenecks and growth implications. The author argues that the chances of success would be greatly enhanced by rapid transformation and free trade in the East, and reduced trade barriers in the West. Aid supplied for other than strictly humanitarian reasons is seen as useless, while direct foreign investment could play a vital role.
