The Integration of the East: The Choices of the West

This paper discusses the transition process of the eastern European economies under gradualism and partial gradualism. In this respect, the role of direct foreign investment is analysed, and its crucial role emphasised. On the other hand, the present support provided by the West on bilateral and multilateral bases would seem to be useless and may even contribute to bring transition to a standstill. For what really matters is the liberalisation of trade: an issue which has still to be addressed.
